We are Somputra Brahmins, originating from Somnath, Gujarat.
We are Somputra Brahmins, originating from Somnath, Gujarat. Somputra Brahmins are believed to be the creation of Lord Chandra. They were created to perform sacred ceremonies which are called Som Yagna for Lord Shiv. And thus, they are named 'Somputra Brahmins'. They reside in the town of Prabhas Patan, popularly known as Somnath and are a part one of the oldest brahmin communities of Gujarat. Skand Puran in its chapters 21, 22, 23 and 24 gives reference for the creation of The Somputra Brahmins. The Pratishtha Yagna of the first temple Lord Somnath was performed by The Agnihotri Brahmins from ChandraLok when they came to Prabhas with Hem Garbha (the secretary of the moon god). After the Yagna was performed, the moon God requested the Brahmins to stay there. The Brahmins stay near Somnath and so they are called Somputra Brahmins. A civilization develops with the sources of water, but the Somputra Brahmins are the only community who are residing near Somnath for at least 2000 years now..
